Pool photometer reagents are the essential consumables needed to carry out water quality analyses with your photometer. Each type of reagent reacts to a specific parameter and allows you to obtain precise numerical results in minutes.

How do photometer reagents work?

The operating principle is simple: add the reagent to the water sample in the container supplied with the photometer, wait the recommended reaction time (usually around 1 minute) and insert the sample into the device. The photometer reads the colour intensity of the sample and converts it into an exact numerical value for the parameter being measured.

Main types of reagents for pool photometers

Each reagent is designed to measure a specific water parameter. The most commonly used are:

  • DPD1: used to measure free chlorine in pool water. Essential for verifying that the disinfectant level is within the recommended range.
  • DPD3: used to measure total chlorine, which includes both free and combined chlorine (chloramines).
  • Phenol Red: the standard reagent for measuring the pH level of pool water. The optimal pH range for a pool is between 7.2 and 7.6.
  • Isocyanuric acid (Cyanuric acid): measures the stabiliser concentration in pools that use stabilised chlorine. Should be kept within the recommended range to avoid blocking the action of chlorine.
  • Total alkalinity: reagents are also available to measure alkalinity, which helps stabilise pH and prevents rapid fluctuations.

Reagent formats and compatibility

Pool photometer reagents are available in several formats depending on the photometer brand and model:

  • Tablets (DPD tablets): the most widely used format, easy to dose and compatible with most photometers.
  • Powder sachets: pre-dosed single-use sachets that simplify measurement.
  • Liquid reagents: used in certain professional models for greater precision.
