A pool heat exchanger is a device that transfers thermal energy between two separate water circuits without them mixing. It is the most efficient system for heating pool water using an existing boiler or thermal solar installation.

How does a pool heat exchanger work?

The pool heat exchanger has two separate water circulation circuits: the primary circuit, connected to the heat source (boiler, solar panels or underfloor heating), and the secondary circuit, which circulates the pool water. Heat is transferred between the two circuits through a series of metal plates or tubes, raising the pool water temperature without the two flows ever coming into contact.

Types of pool heat exchangers

Plate heat exchangers

Plate heat exchangers are the most efficient and compact option. They consist of a series of corrugated metal plates that maximise the contact surface between the two fluid circuits, providing excellent heat transfer performance in a small size.

Tube or coil heat exchangers

Tube heat exchangers (polyethylene or titanium) are more resistant to chemical agents present in pool water and are the most commonly used in this sector. They are ideal for chlorinated pools and salt water pools.

Advantages of pool heat exchangers

  • High efficiency: they make the most of the heat generated by the boiler or solar installation, minimising energy waste.
  • Compatible with any heat source: they work with gas boilers, electric boilers, solar panels, underfloor heating and district heating networks.
  • Long service life: made with materials resistant to pool chemicals (chlorine, pH correctors, etc.).
  • Easy integration: they connect directly to the pool filtration circuit without complex modifications.

How to choose the right pool heat exchanger

To select the correct heat exchanger for your pool you need to take into account the pool volume, the desired temperature increase and the power output of your heat source. At Mercapool we help you find the model best suited to your installation.
