What Is a Sauna and What Is It Used For?
A sauna is a space where very high temperatures are reached. The purpose of this heat is to stimulate sweating in the human body.
There are two main types of saunas: infrared saunas and steam saunas, the latter also known as Finnish saunas or traditional saunas. Both steam saunas and infrared saunas are considered dry saunas. When talking about wet saunas, we are referring to Turkish baths or hammams.
Differences Between Steam and Infrared Saunas
A steam sauna is heated using a wood-burning or electric stove, while an infrared sauna is heated through infrared heating panels.
The heat is generated differently and also affects the body in a different way. In steam saunas, the stove produces the heat, and the user pours water onto the volcanic stones to create steam and distribute the heat throughout the cabin. As the sauna interior heats up, users inside absorb the surrounding heat.
On the other hand, infrared saunas work through infrared radiation. In this case, the infrared waves do not heat the cabin itself but instead heat the people directly inside the sauna. Both types of saunas are perfectly suitable for installation and use at home.
How Long Can You Stay Inside a Sauna?
The amount of time a person can stay inside a sauna has certain limits. The body is exposed to a sudden temperature change which, although beneficial, can also become aggressive if prolonged for too long. In traditional steam saunas, sessions usually last between 15 and 25 minutes. In the case of infrared saunas, sessions can last longer, typically between 30 and 40 minutes.
